Naval surface-to-air missile system The ALBATROS is a well proven, all weather, naval system for point and limited area defence, currently installed on more than 70 ships around the world.
It provides an add-on missile capability to existing or selected gun fire control systems, by sharing with them the tracking radar and the operator’s workstation.
The ALBATROS can use both the standard ASPIDE as well as the ASPIDE 2000 semi-active guided missiles.
The combination of missiles and guns provides the ship with an effective multi-layered air defence capability.
Some 65 ALBATROS systems and 1000 missiles have been ordered and manufactured for 14 countries worldwide: Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Egypt, Greece, Iraq, Italy, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Spain, Thailand and Venezuela. The ALBATROS 2000 programme is operationnal with the Italian Navy as an upgrade to existing systems and the same solution is being proposed to ALBATROS users worldwide.
Principal Anti-Air Missile system ASTER 15 and ASTER 30 – PAAMS is the only missile able to integrate the following three operational missions: self-defence, local area defence of nearby vessels and fleet area defence.
The first firing tests of the PAAMS weapons from the A 50 Sylver Vertical Launching Systems have been successfully achieved.
The first systems have been delivered and installed in the French and Italian Horizon frigate. All the system elements have been installed on the first of class Type 45, HMS Daring. Deliveries of PAAMS equipment to the second Type 45, HMS Dauntless, are now also underway.
Aster missile-based air defence systems will also equip the Franco-Italian FREMM frigates.
Surface-to-Air Anti Missile (SAAM) weapon system ASTER 15 SAAM is the new generation of naval Medium Range Air Defence systems providing self-defence and nearby ship protection
The French and Italian ASTER 15-SAAM systems are qualified. The French aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, is the first warship to have had the system installed, in this instance, with the Arabel Multi-Function Radar. It has now been operational for over two years and has completed a number of successful operational live tests.
Aster missile-based air defence systems will also equip the Franco-Italian FREMM frigates.
Air launched anti-ship missile EXOCET AM39 is the air launched version of the EXOCET anti-ship missiles family.
Ordered by the French Navy for its Super-Etendard and Atlantic aircraft ATL 2 and by 11 foreign countries, the AM39 has already been installed on many different types of aircraft, including helicopters.
EXOCET AM39 has been also adapted on Rafale F3. The EXOCET AM39 is combat-proven.
Surface-to-surface anti-ship missile system The Exocet family is a range of combat-proven air-launched, sea-launched (surface and submarine) and coastal battery missile systems with 3,300 missiles already sold to 33 customers around the world.
The third generation of EXOCET, MM40 Block 2, is in service with the French Navy and with many navies in Southern Europe, the Middle East and South East Asia. More than 800 missiles have been ordered.
Future generation long range anti-ship missile system The EXOCET MM40 BLOCK 3 is in full-scale development and will meet the emerging requirements of navies worldwide as the focus of naval operations moves from former Cold War open-ocean warfare to the littoral arena. EXOCET MM40 BLOCK 3 is compatible with existing Exocet MM40 launchers and logistic support infrastructure assets already in service. Additionally, the launching system is interoperable with all MM40 versions, this enabling a smooth transition to BLOCK 3. The new EXOCET MM40 BLOCK 3 missile can be easily fitted to in-service ships and has inherent provisions to match the new ship requirements for vertical launch.

Firing tests of the Exocet Block 3 were done in 2006 and 2007.
Submarine launched anti-ship missile. EXOCET SM39 is the submarine launched version of the EXOCET missile family The EXOCET SM39 provides, a highly effective destruction capability against surface vessels for submarines.
In service with several navies including the French Navy.
Medium range, lightweight anti-ship missile system MARTE MK2/S is the helicopter-launched version. It has been designed and developed for the Italian Navy's operational requirement in order to provide medium-heavy weight helicopters with a stand-off anti-ship capability, in respect of target ship point and local area defence systems. The system is already in service with the Italian Navy SH-3D Helicopters, and integration and qualification on the new AW-101 and NH-90 helicopters is now complete. The MARTE MK2 is now in the production phase and is operational on the Italian Navy's SH-3 D helicopters. Integration and qualification of the MARTE MK2/S is complete on a new AW-101 and NH-90 helicopters. The system is available for installation on small ships such as OPVs and FACs.
Ship-borne anti-submarine weapon system MILAS is an all weather anti-submarine warfare weapon system derived from the OTOMAT MK2 missile system. The system is designed to carry and release an MU-90, or similar lightweight torpedo, close to the designated submarine position, as indicated by the ship sonar or by a co-operating ASW helicopter or MPA.
The MILAS programme has been developed in co-operation between France and Italy. MILAS is in operational service with the Italian Navy.
Self-protection of surface ships The MISTRAL missile provides a unique self-defence response in the face of saturation threats from aircraft and manoeuvring missiles, the Mistral missile, with its fire-and-forget capability and its 93% demonstrated efficiency rate, provides a unique self-defence response.
The SADRAL and SIMBAD systems are both specifically designed for Mistral launching from vessels at sea, and can be installed as either main or secondary defence systems.
SADRAL and SIMBAD are currently both in service with the French Navy and with many other navies worldwide, meeting all the self-protection requirements of modern vessels.
Lightweight naval air defence system MISTRAL Tetral is designed to complement existing air defence of large warships or as the main air self-defence for smaller vessels.
The European Naval Strike Weapon The importance of cruise missiles to the preservation of an industrial and technological base can never be overemphasised. The European missile systems sector owes its initial marriage to the air-launched cruise missile programme Storm Shadox / SCALP, launched in 1996.
As a prime contractor of cruise missiles, MBDA controls the main technological areas of the development programme, from the performance of the system – range, warhead, guidance – to the integration of SCALP NAVAL onto naval platforms.
Vertical Launch local air defence system The Vertical Launch MICA is a new local area air-defence anti-air system that has no equivalent anywhere in the world. It has been designed to counter threats of saturating attacks by aircraft or missiles. It was designed by French engineers to meet an operational need that had hitherto not been met.
Unlike other SHORAD systems, the Vertical Launch MICA is able to engage multiple targets simultaneously, regardless of weather or electronic warfare conditions.
This type of performance is only possible by using an all-weather Fire and Forget missile fitted with a thrust vector control (TVC) system. This feature, which is unique for a missile in this category, enables vertical launch with a very short reaction time, a high firing rate (less than two seconds between two firings) and easy integration onto platforms, without a costly dedicated sensor and guidance suite.
VL SEAWOLF is highly effective against both aircraft and missile threats with a combat proven record. VL SEAWOLF Block 2 is the third generation of the SEAWOLF air defence weapon system and is in service with the UK Royal Navy on board their Type 23 frigates, with 32 missiles installed in vertical sealed canisters ready for firing. It is also in service with the Royal Malaysian Navy for the new light frigates built by BAE SYSTEMS and with several other foreign navies. The UK MoD has recently contracted a further tranche of the Block 2 standard of SEAWOLF missiles as well as updates to the ship’s equipment. The initial version of the SEAWOLF was successfully deployed in the Falklands war (1982).
