For more than four decades Friedrichshafen is the lynchpin for the development and construction of satellites and instruments for scientific research in space, earth observation and meteorology. Presently the meteorological satellites of the Metop series, the German radar satellites TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X , the mission about the Earths' gravity field investigation by Goce and the Earth´magnetic field mission Swarm ( three satellites) and the ice exploring mission Cryosat-2 as well as the infrared space telescope Herschel take shape in the integration halls by the lake. The space company is also active in ther astronomy mission GAIA. Geo-information services are provided by the Astrium subsidiary Infoterra.

The integration of UAVs and production and integration of drones for aerial target operations, repair and maintenance of unmanned airborne systems (drones) and services within the scope of aerial target operations for exercise, testing and trial purposes.
In Friedrichshafen, staff from EADS Military Air Systems are developing the EuroHawk unmanned system in collaboration with Northrop Grumman and they support the reconnaissance drone CL-289 throughout its service life. In addition, Military Air Systems also offers services worldwide for aerial target operations with drones from Friedrichshafen.
