MAS was commissioned for the study on the risk reduction of an Advanced UAV concept. Contractor for this study is the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB – Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung) in Germany, which is acting on behalf of the governments of the three partner-nations France, Spain and Germany. Through this study, which is carried out over a period of 15 months – beginning end of 2007, MAS is bringing together the capability requirements of the three partner forces with respect to this specific unmanned system and is defining a joint technical solution. First results of this risk reduction study have been basis for the proposal for a development phase of a surveillance design of a UAV production-system, which has been submitted on 28 May 2008. The capability requirements (requested precision of intelligence and revisit time as well as range of theatre to be observed) refer to a jet powered, modular platform-design. It will be combined with powerful, also modular, wide-range sensors and satellite datalinks. The option for a low-level flying recce-version to be developed later on is intended in the overall modular design approach.
