Innovative Concepts

Individual Seat Climatisation is researched at EADS using new concepts to improve the level of cabin comfort. Cabin Air Purification is researched and developed at EADS to maintain the high quality level of cabin air. Our chemical process engineers develop new technologies for cabin air purification. Based on membrane technologies we research and develop gas and liquid exchange processes, for controlling the cabin environment. One parameter to be controlled is the humidity level of cabin seats. A new humidity management concept for individual seat climatisation is being researched, based on electroosmosis, a well known electrokinetic phenomenon.

Laser for optical air data systems (OADS) for the measurement of the true air speed (TAS) and gust detection for aircrafts. The laser offers exceptional properties for OADS-applications: single frequency operation, narrow bandwidth, high stability, short pulse duration, UV - wavelength - range. This enables measurements of backscattered light from molecules (Rayleigh-scattering). The laser radiation is generated by a compact unit existing of a diode pumped ring oscillator - amplifier - system followed by a nonlinear frequency converter. The green light stems from the second harmonic generation process which is necessary to produce the UV - radiation by means of a further sum frequency mixing stage. A first prototype - version has passed several flight tests successfully.

HyLinerThe air transportation of tomorrow will have to live up to the highest economical and ecological standards. HyLiner is a hybrid aircraft that will meet these expectations. "Hybrid” in this case refers to a combination of individual technologies into an ideal whole. The mission (short- and long takeoff), flight dynamics, propulsion, steering and materials all belong to the hybrid concept. The goal – based on a collection of potential ideas and technologies – is the development of concepts, designs and eventually flying models for an ultra-quiet, low-emission mid-range aircraft with extremely short take-off capabilities. This Hyliner concept has a boxwing configuration and embedded engines. A box-wing combines two different wing shapes. The overall shape has extremely good aerodynamic characteristics and also makes the aircraft very stable. which ensures better stability in flight.EADS is one of the founding members of Bauhaus Luftfahrt, which is an internationally oriented think tank that develops sustainable, innovative solutions for future air transportation. Its research projects take a holistic approach to the complex system of aviation, taking into account technical, economic, social and ecological aspects.

To save fuel, this version of the Hyliner ESTOL would fly at approx. mach 0.75. To increase lift, various possibilities are being investigated. Options include thrust vectoring technology, applied to engines with a high bypass ratio and a lift fan system integrated in the wings.EADS is one of the founding members of Bauhaus Luftfahrt, which is an internationally oriented think tank that develops sustainable, innovative solutions for future air transportation. It is a multi-modal transportation concept able lift wagons with passengers or goods off a train, transport them over a short distance by air and put them down in another place either onto rails, or onto a ship or a road vehicle. Passengers could so travel by various means of transportation without actually having to leave their seats.
